There’s no doubt that we are products of our upbringing and environment; the way our parents act around us has shaped the type of people we’ve become today. In celebration of Mother’s Day, we asked people about the most important thing their mothers taught them, and here’s what they had to say.

1. "Don't waste water." - Abdallah, 27

“She would nag anytime someone left the tap running longer than three seconds. It would annoy me when I was younger, but I have come to understand and appreciate it. It turns out she’s a bit of an environmentalist.”

2. "Be kind, no matter what." - Esraa, 22

“I still struggle with it sometimes, to constantly have that in the back of my mind. I think I do a pretty good job most of the time, even though it isn’t always easy.”

3. "Do whatever you want and take responsibility for it." - Bassem, 54

“Whatever I do, if I set my mind to it and it’s something I believe in, then I know that she will back me up.”

4. "Be sensitive to the needs of others." - Lobna, 25

“Honestly, I know it sounds cliché, but she taught me the importance of sensitivity, the importance of having empathy and compassion.”

5. "Never let anyone overstep." - Aya, 37

“I learned from her that as long as right is on my side, then I should fight for what is mine, to not be a pushover.”

6. "Don't listen to what people say." - Mariam, 31

“Not in a silly way, rather not to let people stand in my way if I want to pursue something. If people think that the career I want or the haircut I have is ridiculous, that shouldn’t stop me from doing what I want.”

7. "If you talk too much, you'll eventually wind up in trouble." - Mina, 26

“If all you do is talk and you won’t shut up, at some point you’re going to say something that’s going to make you wish you kept your mouth shut.”
