Vinny’s Pizzeria: A Slice of NYC at the Heart of Cairo

To say that pizza is a universally adored food would be a major understatement. It’s one of those meals that work with every mood; whether you just went through a breakup, need to pull an all-nighter before an exam, or want to celebrate a happy occasion, pizza is always the answer. While there are numerous types of pizza offered across Egypt, all of which are superb, one that never disappoints is the New York style pizza.

You know the one; you’ve seen Joey ordering it on Friends, you’ve watched Kramer attempt to make it on Seinfeld – you’ve even seen Marshall gush about it on How I Met Your Mother (that scene in particular wasn’t about a New York style pizza, but who cares?).

For this week’s review, we decided to visit one of our favorite pizza joints: Vinny’s Pizzeria. Despite the fact that it now has branches in Zamalek (delivery only) and New Cairo (Downtown Mall), the Maadi branch on Road 9 remains the best.

Upon entering, you’ll notice the place has been decorated to mirror the ‘typical’ pizza joint you’d see on TV. The tables in the cozy indoor area are covered with houndstooth-patterned tablecloths, and the walls are covered with chalkboards depicting drawings of pizzas and the Ninja Turtles.

When Vinny’s first opened a few years ago, we ordered the Four-Cheese Pizza, but asked the waiter to remove the blue cheese. To our surprise, he responded with a short “no.” We were surprised and asked why, to which he responded with: “Just try it with the blue cheese, and if you don’t like it I’ll make you a new one with no extra charge.”

Until today, we are eternally thankful to this pizza guru; the Four-Cheese Pizza has been our favorite since then, and we now ask for extra blue cheese! When we tried it this time, it was as wonderful as ever. The blue cheese offers a sharp flavor that complements the richness of the other cheeses, which all melt together to form a heavenly combination.

We also tried out the BBQ Chicken Pizza, which is topped with their signature homemade BBQ sauce. The chicken was well cooked, and the BBQ sauce (we asked for it spicy) added a great kick that made us want to order one more. We had to resist, however, so we could save room for the third pizza.

The Hawaiian Pizza wasn’t the best, but it was still good. We felt like it needed more pineapples because the portion wasn’t large enough to significantly contribute to the flavor of the entire pie. The pepperoni, however, was tasty and the portion was more generous. It was an okay pizza (there’s really no such thing as a bad pizza), but we would rather stick to our favorite.

The crust in general was perfect; it was chewy, soft, and had just the right amount of saltiness. So if you’re one of those people who (gasp!) tend to throw away the crust, don’t; dip it in their homemade BBQ sauce instead.

It was time for the grand finale: the Nutella Madness Calzone. We have to be honest, this dessert is a total gamble; sometimes it arrives filled to the brim with chocolate, other times the calzone itself is larger but the chocolate portion doesn’t keep up. So whether you’re ordering it at the restaurant, online, or by phone, ask for extra chocolate. Once you do that, you increase your chances of digging into every chocolate lover’s dream. The dough is superb, and the chocolate is rich and gooey, even if it isn’t always actual Nutella.

We tried their other branches but they weren’t as good as the original, so if you’re planning on trying out their pizzas, just make the trip to Maadi and don’t be lazy!
