UN Security Council Votes to Condemn Trump Jerusalem Decision

-

On Monday, 18 December, almost every member of the United Nations (UN) Security Council voted against United States President Trump’s decision to make Jerusalem the capital of Israel. Koro Bessho, permanent representative of Japan in the UN, asked the members to vote whether in favor of the draft resolution contained by the council to have Trump rescind his decision.

While 14 raised their hands in favor, only one member raised her hand against: United States representative Nikki Haley, who said, “What we witnessed here today in the Security Council is an insult and it won’t be forgotten.” On Trump’s decision, she challenged, saying, “We did so proudly and the United States will not be told by any country where we could put our embassy.”

The S/2017/1060 draft resolution would have voided Trump’s shift on Jerusalem. While, Bessho stated that “the draft resolution has not been adopted owing to a negative vote of a permanent member of a council,” Haley proclaimed that this is an example of an ineffective UN solution on the Palestine-Israeli conflict. The veto was the United States’ first in more than six years.
