Sandbox Releases New Collection Inspired by Burn Victims

“No matter what happens, you can always take something painful and turn it into something beautiful.”

The words of Suhayla Al Sheikh, Sandbox founder and designer, perfectly embody the vision of her new collection, entitled Cicatrix – “the scar of a healed wound,” which was just released today.

Before working on the collection, which was created in collaboration with the Ahl Masr Foundation, Al Sheikh sat down with four female burn victims to listen to their stories and get to know them on a more intimate level.

“It was very important for me to communicate to these women that the pain that left a physical scar is actually part of who they are, and that it’s beautiful,” Al Sheikh said.

The collection is there to empower women, especially those who have suffered from any physical or psychological scarring in their lives.

“It’s about finding confidence in where you’ve come from and taking your struggles and the pain that left a physical mark and turning it into something beautiful,” Al Sheikh said.

Al Sheikh took pictures of the burn scars on the hands of the four women and crafted the collection based on the desert rose stone; a stone particularly close to her heart and one that she felt resembled the patterns of the scars.

As a result, Al Sheikh created 26 silver jewelry pieces accented with gold, of which 15 percent will go to Ahl Masr Foundation.

The collection includes two lines: the first is the “Visible,” which is based on the patterns of the scars, using hammering, carving and layering techniques on silver. The other line, “Imprints,” relied on a lazer engraved interpretation of the burn scar marks, providing a more intimate interpretation of the scars.

According to the Ahl Masr Foundation, more than 300,000 people suffer from burns each year in Egypt. Other than medical help, survivors need psychotherapy to be able to reintegrate into society.
