Prominent Human Rights Lawyer and Former Presidential Candidate Khalid Ali Detained in Egypt


According to Egyptian Streets, former presidential candidate and rights lawyer Khaled Ali has been arrested on charges of giving an obscene hand gesture in front of the state council, and also on lacking the necessary permits for his political party.

Photos circulating around social media showed Ali giving the middle finger gesture after the ruling that Tiran and Sanafir islands were not Saudi. He will be detained for 24 hours, pending investigations.

Several people on social media have begun showing their solidarity with Ali, sharing pictures of security officials giving the same hand gesture.
