How to Support a Breast Cancer Patient

Despite how scary the statistics are in regards to breast cancer, it’s possible to win the battle against this awful disease. In order for that to happen, however, it is crucial to stand by the patient during their ordeal. Breast cancer can happen to any of the women in your life; here’s how you can support them the right way.

Get Involved

Supporting your loved ones includes being there for them in person. Attend chemo sessions with them, visit them regularly, and take care of them when they don’t feel well.

Don’t Show Pity

The last thing a patient needs is your pity, and even though it is only normal that you feel this way it will only make them feel bad about themselves. Instead, show compassion, understanding, and respect.

Remind Them of Their Strength

Always remind them that they are strong enough to fight and win; remind them of all their strong characteristics and the situations where they showed courage and persistence.

Listen to What They Have to Say

Allowing a breast cancer patient to express their feelings and thoughts is very important. This lets you both connect on a deeper level and helps them feel that they are not alone.

Cheer Them Up

Take them out, do stuff they enjoy, and make sure they understand that just because they are sick doesn’t mean they should stop having fun.

Don’t Forget About Yourself

Taking care of someone - let alone a cancer patient - is a challenging task that will take up a lot of energy. Take care of yourself and give yourself some private time every once in a while so that you are able to support and care for others.
