Did Justin Bieber Close the Door on His Love Story with Selena?

Their love story officially began in 2011 under heavy press coverage for very obvious reasons; Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are both very successful artists who have a very strong fan base and Selena even holds the title for most followed person on Instagram right now. When they were officially an item, supporters of the pair, who at one point included Hailey Baldwin, started calling the couple “Jelena.”

Although Justin and Selena’s relationship formally ended in 2012, it was followed by a long series of makeups and breakups that stretched till last March. But now after news of Justin Bieber’s engagement to Hailey Baldwin surfaced, fans are wondering if this could really be the end of Jelena.

To be able to find an answer for that, we would need a little throwback to Bieber and Gomez’s dating timeline, which is as complicated as it can get. They first started sparking relationship rumors in 2010, when Justin was only 16 and Selena 18. They made their relationship official in 2011 with a romantic trip to St. Lucia. Throughout the year they attended numerous red carpet events together and continued to gush over each other in interviews, with Justin calling Selena “a blessing.”

Up until November 2012 they were living in a fairytale and it was later revealed that Selena had even moved in with Justin at that time. Sounds like paradise, right? Not quite.

The honeymoon phase eventually ended, and the whole world was watching it happen. The first breakup came in November 2012 while Justin was on his Believe tour. Between then and the end of 2015 it was very hard to keep up with the former couple, not only because of their on again off again relationship status and rumored side flings, but also because of many personal problems they were both going through. It was also during these three years when they both decided to share parts about their love story with the world through their music.

Bieber’s public image hit rock bottom during that time with a DUI arrest, rude and arrogant behavior, as well as multiple reports about reckless driving, loud house parties, and fights with paparazzi. Still, Selena chose to stay by his side from time to time, even though it never seemed to work out between them. She even gave him a standing ovation as he was being booed by the crowd while receiving a billboard music milestone award in 2013. In April of the same year, Justin also got a tattoo of Selena, which he still has till today.

On the other hand, Selena Gomez was diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease, in 2014 and had to undergo chemotherapy, besides having to deal with symptoms of lupus like panic attacks and depression. This information was only revealed in 2015 and it was also revealed that Justin had been a constant source of support for her during this very difficult time. During one of their breakups, Justin made a statement that stressed on the fact that no matter what, they will always be there for each other: “She is someone I love dearly. I'm never going to stop loving her. I'm never going to stop checking in on her,” he’d said.

Towards the end of 2015, it was obvious that the two ex-lovers finally had closure and were ready to focus on their careers. While promoting her Revival album, Selena said: “There's closure in a very good, healthy way. We've seen each other. I'm always encouraging, and I am proud of his journey.”

In February 2016, a month after his vacation with Hailey Baldwin in St. Barths, Justin made the statement: “We don't talk often, but we're cordial. If she needs something, I'm there for her. If I need something, she's there for me.”

Fast forward to August and the couple had indeed stopped seeing each other, but the jealousy was still rampant, as Selena made some comments on Justin’s Instagram post with then-girlfriend Sofia Richie, which got her in a fight with Bieber and led him to delete his Instagram account. Later that day, Selena described her comments as selfish and pointless. Bieber seemed to return the favor when he dissed The Weeknd, who started dating Selena in January 2017.

Up until September 2017 all in the world was good, Selena was happily dating The Weeknd, while Justin was taking some time for himself after canceling his “mentally draining” Purpose world tour. But then Selena shocked the world through an Instagram post uncovering that she had a kidney transplant during the summer as a result of her lupus disease. A month later, Justin and Selena were spotted together again. With reports of her and the Weeknd breaking up it was obvious she and Justin were definitely back on. This time around it definitely seemed like both Selena and Justin had put the past behind them and were individually mature enough to be able to give it another try. For a few months the pair was seen having romantic dinner dates, riding bicycles, and going to the church. But by now, we obviously know things didn’t work out. They broke up for the last time last March, a month after she attended his dad’s wedding in Jamaica.

What was even more shocking than this sudden breakup was Justin and Hailey’s engagement last week, something nobody saw coming especially considering they had only been seeing each other again for a little under a month.

It’s hard to tell if there’s still some hope left for Jelena supporters. On the one hand, Justin and Selena both had their very long list of flings between their breakups, including Charlie Puth who reportedly wrote his hit songs Attention and How Long about Selena, as well as Hailey Baldwin herself. Despite all of that they still found their way back to each other. And if we try to look for any clues in their music, we’d find that ever since they first got together in 2011, most of their songs were inspired by one another. Especially with songs like The Heart Wants What It Wants by Gomez or Mark My Words by Bieber, it’s obvious how much these two were fighting to be together despite the odds.

On the other hand, maybe their last try as a couple was a confirmation that even with all the love they may have for each other, it’s just not meant to be.

Whatever the case, the end of Jelena definitely marks the end of an era and we all surely got away with some really good and relatable music from it. As for their future, who knows? Let’s just leave it open with this quote by Justin: “When you love someone that much, even if something comes between you, it's a love that never really dies.”
