If my parents had it their way, I’d never leave their sight; because no parents like to see their only daughter pack her suitcase and leave the nest. I repeatedly heard the words “don’t leave” from my friends and family and I knew that my adventure was their uncomfortable reality. Studying abroad is the most selfish decision I’ve ever made and that doesn’t make me a terrible person. I no longer hesitate when saying this, but it’s perfectly OKAY to do something for yourself and no one else – you come out wiser and more experienced and between me and you, that was an investment I was willing to make in myself.
I blinked and a year and a half of my life was over. If you ask me to describe the time I spent studying abroad in Spain, I truly would not know where to begin. It is an unparalleled experience and I say unparalleled because it’s an experience with no equal – so enriching and edifying, it changes your life. You submerge into a culture you have chosen.
Regardless of where you go, there is no other experience that shakes your roots like studying abroad. You understand that “normal” is defined by society – a constructed concept and only what we see the most of. Studying abroad lets you leave every disposition that you have ever associated with and in the process, you grow as a person.
There’s so much out there for you to explore and in all honesty, it’s hard to know what you want to do in the world if you’ve never seen it…
