8 New Year’s Resolutions to Make in 2018 (That Aren’t About Dieting!)

The countdown to 2018 has begun, and many people use this time to think about how to become better people in the new year. However, there is so much more to life than vowing to cut out carbs or spending each day in the gym. While it’s great to decide to become healthier next year, you should also consider aiming for other goals that have the power to change your life.

1. Aim for a Green Lifestyle

Now that the world knows enough about the negative effects of global warming, it’s every person’s duty to try to minimize their carbon footprint. Make small, easy changes like turning off the lights when you’re leaving a room, separating your trash into categories for easier recycling, and taking your own bag to grocery stores in order to use less plastic. It might not seem like much to you, but the planet will thank you!

2. Save Money by Shopping Local

Now that the devaluation of the Egyptian pound has caused imported products to cost an arm and a leg, try to aim for cheaper, locally made products instead. While these local companies might not be as famous as the stores you see in malls, a purchase from them means you’ll be benefitting a fellow citizen instead of a large conglomerate.

3. Practice Gratitude

It’s easy to look back on your year and think that it went miserably. The truth is, the human brain tends to forget the basic blessings most people take for granted. In 2018, write down three things you’re grateful for each day and when the year is over, take a look at the 365 lists and you’ll realize how lucky you really are!

4. Lessen the Chemicals You Use

Just like you care about the wellbeing of our planet, think about your own wellbeing and how many chemicals you expose yourself to everyday. From harmful deodorants and chemical-ridden makeup to artificial snacks and harmful substances, make it a goal to seek out the natural alternatives available and see how it can impact your lifestyle.

5. Do One Charitable Thing Every Day

You don’t necessarily need to visit an orphanage or donate all your savings, but you can make small contributions on a daily basis. Whether it’s packing up your leftovers at a restaurant and giving it to someone hungry or helping out a defenseless animal in need, you’re bound to feel amazing afterwards.

It’s a shame that the majority of the global population spend most of their time in front of screens. Instead of scrolling aimlessly through your social media feeds, go offline and pick up a book! There are a ton of soon-to-be bestsellers flooding the market soon, and what better way to relax than to curl up with one alongside a cup of hot chocolate?

7. Get a Dose of Culture

Think back to most of your outings in 2017. Cafes? Coffee and shisha? It gets awfully boring doing the same thing day in and day out, so make an effort to get exposed to the cultural hubs the city of Cairo has to offer. Attend a new concert, watch a play or take a class –you’ll feel like you’re making the most of your day, every day!

8. Plan Fun Trips

Take a look at next year’s list of official holidays and bring out the planner! There are so many long weekends to take advantage of, and it’s a bummer when you miss out on potential trips because you didn’t plan well. Whether it’s a winter wonderland right here in Egypt, a beautiful city thousands of kilometers away or a quick day trip for a break from your usual routine, the options are endless!
