With hundreds if not thousands of movies slated to be released this year, from action to animation, we thought it would be a good idea to try and find out what comedy movies are coming out this year; because let’s face it, we could all use a good laugh.

1. Deadpool 2

The foul mouthed superhero is back for a sequel that promises to be better than the first instalment. In the sequel for the Deadpool movie Ryan Reynolds is back as the titular character to defend a young mutant from the time travelling ‘Cable’, played by Josh Brolin (No Country for Old men & young Tommy Lee Jones in Men in Black III). Reynolds’ character puts together a team of mutants called X-force in order to defend the unwitting child mutant. The Movie is set for release on the 18th of May in the United States, so it shouldn’t be long after that before we will get a chance to watch the hilarious superhero in action over here.

2. The Death of Stalin

This satirical look at the power vacuum left after Stalin’s death in 1953 is sure to leave you cracking up. The film stars Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire) as Nikita Khrushchev (the man who took over after Stalin) as well as an array of talented actors including Simon Russel Beale (Penny Dreadful) and Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development). The story follows the scramble for power between military men and politicians alike after Stalin (who headed the Soviet Union) dies suddenly. Looking at the trailer, it is difficult to discern where the truth is and where fiction is because it all seems very absurd. The film was released in the United States on the 9th of March but it is unclear whether it will make it to Egyptian cinemas or not; it has already been banned in Russia, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.

3. Ocean's 8

The Ocean’s franchise is back with an all-female reboot of the comedy heist films. The star studded cast will include Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean, Danny Ocean’s (George Clooney) estranged sister. After being released from prison and promising the parole panel that she will lead an honest life, she begins scheming to pull off the heist of the century at the Met Gala. To do this she must assemble a team, which is made up of Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter (Alice in Wonderland) and many more set to appear in the movie. The release date for the movie is the 8th of June and we hope it holds up to the hype surrounding it.

4. Gringo

In this bizarre movie David Oyelowo (Martin Luther King Jr. from Selma) stars alongside Joel Edgerton (Black Mass) and Charlize Theron (who is also a producer on the movie); the story follows Oyelowo’s character who is a business man sent to Mexico to deliver an experimental marijuana pill. During a night out Oyelowo is kidnapped by a drug cartel. What ensues is one unfortunate event after another as he and the mercenary sent to save him must evade capture. The Movie is directed by Nash Edgerton (Joel’s brother) and was released in the U.S. on the 9th of March. Given the story, this is perhaps one of the movies you might have to download or stream because we don’t know if it’ll make it to cinemas here or not.

5. Holmes and Watson

The iconic detective team is once again making an appearance on the big screen but this time, in a more comedic sense. While the plot of the film has yet to be released to the public, we know that Holmes will be played by funny-man Will Ferrell, while Watson will be played by John C. Reilly. Other cast members include Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel) as Moriarty and Hugh Laurie (House M.D.) as Mycroft Holmes. The movie is set for release on the 21st of December.

6. Tag

Perhaps a ridiculous premise with an odd choice of casting but that in itself is intriguing enough. This film, which is based on an article published in the Wall Street Journal, follows a group of class mates who have been playing the same game of tag well into their adulthood. It sounds weird right? While initially we met the idea with skepticism, after watching the trailer we’re not so sure if we’re completely against the idea anymore. The cast includes Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker), Ed Helms (The Hangover), Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Jake Johnson (New Girl). The film is set for release in the U.S. on the 15th of June and we’re kind of excited to see if the trailer was enough or if there’s more to this movie.

Bonus: Where'd you go Bernadette?

This movie is based on a book by the same name and has been brought to the big screen by director Richard Linklater (Boyhood). The premise is simple, Bernadette who is played by Cate Blanchett (Carol) hates people and the outside world. She has made it a habit to avoid everyone at all costs, especially other parents at her daughter’s school. Unfortunately when one of the mothers at her daughter’s school disappears, she makes it her job to find out where she went and what happened to her. There is currently no trailer out for this movie although it is slated for release on the 11th of May so one should appear soon. The rest of the cast includes Billy Crudup (Watchmen), Kristin Wiig (Bridesmaids), Judy Greer (Archer) and Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix).
