We all loved the great author Naguib Mahfouz and mourned his death 12 years ago. He was internationally recognized after winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1988. Aside from his great novels and short stories, Mahfouz was a script writer and left an impact on Egyptian cinemas; here are five movies you probably didn’t know were written by him.

A romantic movie adapted from an Ihsan Abdul Qudoos novel and starring Faten Hamama and Ahmed Mazhar, this movie is about a girl who follows in her mother’s footsteps in the gambling world.

They Made Me a Murderer

The epic action movie that is considered one of the most important movies in Arabic cinema was co-written by Mahfouz along with other writers.

I Am Free

This feminist movie starring Lobna Abd el Aziz and Shokry Sarhan is about a young lady obsessed with freedom who wants to break all boundaries and rules.

Between Heaven and Earth

Starring Hend Rostom, this movie follows a group of strangers whose lives are turned upside down when they get stuck in an elevator.
