10 Simple Habits of Happy People

Human beings spend their lives searching for happiness, thinking that it is some kind of place you reach without exerting any effort. However, that is completely untrue; in order to live a happy, fruitful life, people need to alter their lives and perception accordingly.

Happiness is a decision rather than a choice or destiny. So if you want to be happy, then this is a decision that you have to make every day for the rest of your life. Life will throw sticks and stones at you, but it’s up to you to decide whether they are going to break you or not.

If you are looking for joy, peace of mind and genuine happiness, here is a list of simple habits that could flip your world upside down.

1. Get Rid of Toxic Relationships

Start off by evaluating your life and the people in it. The types of people you keep in your life affect you to a great extent. If you surround yourself with toxic, negative people, don’t expect your life to be all butterflies and sunshine, because it will be the other way around. However, when you surround yourself with cheerful people, your life becomes much simpler; you’ll find yourself living life with a positive viewpoint and you’ll even notice that you have more energy!

2. Smile

Smiling is a very important tool for boosting your happiness. Even if you don’t feel like smiling, just try. Research has shown that any physical action can change your mood. When you force yourself to smile, your body asks your brain to release serotonin, a hormone which improves your mood. Try it once and let your brain do all the magic.

3. Spend Less Time in Front of Screens

Previous generations didn’t face this dilemma, but this generation and the coming ones do. Spending so much time on the internet or using technological devices detaches you from the real world. Instead of staring at screens to binge watch series or like pictures on instagram, try going out for a walk in any green area and enjoy the weather. You could also spend your time doing something you really like to do, like cycling or going on fun day trips.

4. Set Goals and Achieve Them

When setting goals, you feel like you have a purpose in life and it gives you a sense of direction. One of the best feelings in the world is when you achieve a goal by doing the extraordinary. That adrenaline rush that takes over your body when you are about to achieve greatness is worth the world. It doesn’t matter how huge or small these goals are; they can be as small as being on time for the whole week or as big as getting straight As. What matters is that by the end of each day, you make yourself proud and acknowledge it.

5. Don’t Hold Grudges

Grownups tend to advise youngsters to never hold grudges and voice out and share their feelings. Try it once and you will feel like the weight you were carrying suddenly became light and insignificant. Face people by telling them about what is bothering you. Forgive them even if they are not sorry. And most importantly, learn how to forget, because holding grudges will definitely burden you.

6. Get Spiritual and Meditate

Dedicate a couple of minutes daily to free your mind from any thoughts or worries. Spend this time admiring nature’s beauty, count your blessings and reflect on the good things that are happening to you. Meditating helps you understand the importance of a quiet moment where you recharge your batteries and spend some alone time understanding yourself and what makes you happier.

7. Make Others Happy

Making people around you happy is a powerful tool that needs some recognition. Start by supporting a cause or indulging in a simple act of kindness. Tell that random person how great their smile is or how much you like their outfit, or even how that color brings out their eyes. These little things make a difference in people’s lives and the smile they have on their face will definitely make your day. Once you feel the amount of happiness derived by this act, you’ll never be able to stop!

8. Don’t Compare

Don’t waste your time comparing yourself to others. Be proud of who you are and what you have achieved. If you compare yourself to others you will be disappointed, because you’ll always find people who are doing more. Know that it is more important to evaluate yourself based on how far you’ve gotten since your starting point rather than comparing yourself to other people or looking at how far you are from your end point; the journey to where you are now is what matters.

Most importantly, understand the value of your time, because a minute spent in sadness is 60 seconds of happiness wasted. Take good care of your body and the way you look regardless of how you feel, because this will boost your self esteem.
